WOMEN

Throughout the ages, all colors have held varyingrepresentations of class, heath, economic status, profession, and numerous other qualities. Color is associated with feelings of lust, anger, jealousy, creativity, or humility and the same goes for Korean culture, specificallytraditional Korean clothing such as Hanbok.Similar to the way Kimono is associated with the people of the Japanese culture, the name of the old-fashionedclothingof Koreans inthe third century is known as Hanbok. This was molded by itinerantfoundations of every part of Asiafor a special event. Hanbok is still worn today because of clothing brands, which have reinterpreted the timelessHanbok lookintoclothing adaptedintocontemporarystyles. Hanbok has reinvented its look, evolving with our ever-changing society.

Women’s Hanbokis typically comprised of a Jeogorishirt,a long skirt, and Chima, which is a jacket coveringboth the upper torsoand the arms.Jeogoriare pants typically worn by men when relating to Baji. Customarily, when someone wore bright pigments and intricate prints, this was likelya personofa royal family or aristocracy. The average personwore light, naturaltones. As previously mentioned, the Hanbok shades hold special meaning and certainshadesholdgreat significance in Korean customs.

We shall now discussOgansaek and Obangsaek. Obangsaek is the customary Korean spectrum of color, which comprises shades of black, white, blue, yellow, and red. Ogansaek is the other spectrum that is found when those basicshadesare mixed, such as khaki, sky blue, brilliant red, sulfur yellow, and violet. The customs of Korea have associatedcertainconnotationswith each of the colors, such as:

Red –signifiesloveand lust, prosperity, and good luck. Women commonly wear this color on their wedding day. Another significance of this color is masculinity. It stands forthe element of fire and the fundamentalSoutherndirection.

Black – signifies creation and timelessness, aptitude and wisdom, and was worn by the intellects. Adversely, not only is black thought to representdeath, unhappiness, and darkness, it is also allied withthe element of water when it is worn.

Blue-signifiesnew birth/beginnings, brightness/clarity, andgentle femininitywhich contrastsmasculinity(red.) Blue was typically worn by women in the courtroomon their skirts and on the coats of court officials. It represents the element of wood and the fundamental Easterndirection.

Yellow – signifies the focus of the entire universe and isthought to represent Earth. Often times, singlewomen will wearvarying shades of yellow to signify that they areuntaken. In the past, yellow was rarely worn by people other than royalty and golden shadeswere usually worn by rulers.

Green -signifies all of the same things that blue does (fresh start, youth, young energy)but, in the past, was typically worn by married women.

White -signifies the fundamental Western direction andelement of metal. White is the color/shade of clarity, purity, and modesty. It also represents living, honesty, tranquility, and loyalty.

The meanings behind these colors don’t hold as much significance as they once did but are stilla littlefun to think about when choosing colors.
